Over 3,000 Windows Phone 7 devices in the wild

Windows Phone 7

Although Microsoft has a long road ahead of them to catch up to the 59 million iPhones sold to date, the baby is taking its first steps. According to the Facebook application configured exclusively for Windows Phone 7 devices, Microsoft has now seeded 3,076 mobile phones into the hands of developers, Microsofties and a handful of US journalists (jealous).

Bear in mind the cost of this exercise to seed even more devices to developers and its employees entirely for free, Microsoft is already beginning to reap some of the reward as developers have begun demoing a reasonable amount of in-production WP7 applications and games.

As generic and rough honestly crap as some of them may be, there’s definitely momentum and enthusiasm building amongst developers and that’s exactly what Microsoft needs to compliment its otherwise impressive mobile OS. 3,000 down. 59 million to go.

  1. This isn’t entirely true. You see, people have been unlocking the emulator images and use the emulator to try the
    Facebook integration too…

    1. As far as I know, none of the unlocked emulator images has been able to get Facebook integration to work.

  2. I heard a rumor that AT&T ordered 8 million for launch. If that is true and they sell that would be a very nice start!

P.S. can you add touch panning/scrolling to metrotwit ๐Ÿ˜€

    1. P.P.S. and can you port MetroTwit to run on WP7? Free would be nice but I’d pay 0.99 up to 2.99 for it. ๐Ÿ™‚

  3. Hi Long, i know this isn’t the right place for me to post this, but
i was wondering if you could make the Bing Image Archive downloadable (.zip files) for an entire month, that’d be awesome, thanks!

  4. I have a few friend who are on windows mobile a.k.a. Windows phone classic who have installed the Facebook client for WM and whenever they posted it showed “windows phone”.. That was a few months ago though..

  5. Ahh yes scratch the last comment, I only have 9friends using the app and they aren’t the ones using WM ^_^

  6. Well I can confirm that in Ireland the official answer from Microsoft reps on the number of Windows Phone is….. 2!!

Yep that’s tru, if I need to test an app I am building I have to drive miles to Microsoft Atrium (the other side of Dublin for me) at a predined time to debug and test in a ‘lab’ setup.

    Sucks big time

  7. 59 Millions compared to 3000 ?!! But Windows Mobile has been around since so many years !! Why do we talk about it as if it’s just new…….everything iPhone or Android did, Win Mobile already did it many years before….just bad marketing :s

  8. Does that 3000 include the phones that Microsoft gave away to their employees? or they haven’t handed out those phones yet?
