If the competition's prize money decreases for a given year, then bad luck. That's the way it goes. If you don't like the prize money, don't compete. Nobody is forcing you. It sounds like if you won $1m in the Lottery you'd complain if the previous winner won $3m. I'm afraid you're just coming across as bitter. Get over it and be grateful for the opportunities that winning this competition will present. There is no such thing as “fair” when it comes to these things. If the competition’s prize money decreases for a given year, then bad luck. That’s the way it goes. If you don’t like the prize money, don’t compete. Nobody is forcing you.

It sounds like if you won $1m in the Lottery you’d complain if the previous winner won $3m.

Good thing we came second in the national SDI finals then went on to win the Interop award :P Hopefully next year we'll win the SDI :P Sadly you can't participate so none of that extra huge 30,000 usd cake for you :P And speaking of tax, yes you have to pay some of that too.. I'm not sure but I think we might be charged something like 33% on our $10,000 prize money.
