Whilst looking through DreamSpark, I noticed a boxshot for Visual Studio 2008 Professional Edition and thought “that looks pretty cool”. Then I realized that’s because I’ve never seen it before. Perhaps they have been published for a while now and I just missed it. Nevertheless, here they are with all the flavors of Visual Studio 2008 for you to enjoy, that is if you have a fetish for software packaging as much as I do. Shame they’re in such low resolution though.

10 insightful thoughts

  1. Christ what Godawful packaging! Someone in the arts department needs to be shot. I mean, alright, dev software is about as interesting as granddad’s slippers – but MSFT seriously needs to loose that addiction to vomit-green.

And what’s with that grey? It’s like something from an IBM advert from the 1980s. This has ‘corporate dull’ written all over it.

  2. Is is just me or does Microsoft seem to have an Obsessive attactchment to multiple versions of the same system?

  3. Daniel – this is “corporate dull” stuff what do you expect.

Chustar – whats wrong with versions tailored to specific markets.

  4. @Roz: I like the designs, but why so many versions? I can only see two products for two markets…
Visual Studio 2008 Cheap Bastard Edition
    Visual Studio 2008 Usable Edition
I guess since I don’t use visual studio I might be missing the point. But I HATE having to choose the craptastic version when the fully featured version is on the shelf giving me the stink-eye. It feels like I’m cheating myself because I’m too cheap to buy the better product.

  5. I think they look fine, although I’m not a fan of the plastic cases.. cardboard is much nicer (albeit harder to stay that way)..

I disagree with Daniel, sorry, I don’t think your points make sense, they aren’t boring, but you dare to say that after saying they should dump the bright green edition..

The darker ones are aimed at more business setups, so I don’t think its important that they are overly colourful.. but I don’t think any of them come under the category ‘dull’.
