[...] Having said that, Microsoft designers are unofficially committed to redesign most of the icons in Windows to the new Aero interface standards. Now, with RTM just around the corner, how are they doing? Remember last time, I recorded 4562 icons in Windows Vista? Today I took the time to extract all the icons from the Windows Vista build 5728 resource files, and identified all the 256*256 icons. I’m happy to report there are nearly 350 new high-resolution icons in Windows Vista now. Have a look for yourself. Note: icon size reduced for ease of viewing. [...]

[...] When you can witness the sheer scale of such design projects like redefining each icon in the Office system and even the monolithic Windows operating system, you can come to understand better why Microsoft just can’t make guarantees about each icon being updated to the new style. But on a brighter note, good job Office team. They’ve done extremely well in terms of UI consistency in the primary applications: Word, Excel and Powerpoint. [...]

[...] Long Zheng completed the astounding task of finding all four thousand, five hundred and sixty-two icons present in the system32 folder of Windows Vista, as a way of showing why calls for Microsoft to update every single system icon to the new Aero style is unrealistic. While I disagree with his point, since, if he could document all of them, surely the job isn’t completely impossible, it is a stunning number of icons, and Long has used a cool Flash tool from Zoomify to illustrate all of them. The Flash gallery is worth clicking the link, all by itself. (via Channel 9 > Findory) Posted: 9/3/2006 by Nathan Weinberg in: [...]
